Population pyramids are a highly efficient way of graphically
representing the age and sex composition of a population. From the overall
shape of an area’s population pyramid it is easy to see, for example,
whether it displays features such as an aging population, a youth bulge,
or a preponderance of people in family situations.
Population Pyramids of LGAs in the Southern Metropolitan region
reveal the contrasting demography of these areas. Frankston, Greater
Dandenong, and Kingston have profiles that are very similar to those
of Melbourne and Victoria as a whole. Bayside, Glen Eira, and Mornington
Peninsula show a higher concentration of older people, particularly females.
For different reasons, Bayside and Mornington Peninsula display a noticeable
deficit in the 20-34 age groups, while, by contrast, Stonnington and
especially Port Phillip are very attractive for the same age groups.
The Cardinia and Casey pyramids show evidence of the appeal of these
areas for younger families.
